Follow filmmaker Vianet Djenguet in this new feature-length documentary about an unbelievable mission to habituate a family of endangered Eastern lowland gorillas. A truly fascinating journey and visually stunning film, Silverback brings us inside this modern-day effort where conservationists are striving to create lasting bonds between humans and animals in the wild. If Vianet and his team are successful in earning the trust of Mpungwe, the family’s 35-year-old patriarch (a notoriously protective 450-pound silverback), it will allow tourists to visit, which would provide an income source to help protect the gorillas and their habitat. Don’t miss this incredible expedition to save a family from extinction. Watch Nature: Silverback on Wednesday, October 23, at 8pm on KQED 9. Or stream it on the PBS App or KQED Passport.
All across the solar system, volcanoes are erupting, storms are raging and ice is acting in strange ways. And surprises like these aren’t limited to planets: Our solar system is home to a myriad of fascinating smaller bodies, including moons, asteroids and comets. In recent decades, space missions have brought these neighboring worlds into sharp focus. Now, using the latest scientific imagery and outstandingly realistic animations, planetary scientists take us on a journey across the solar system to uncover new revelations about our celestial neighborhood — and illuminate how Earth may be the oddest world of all. The five-part series of NOVA: Solar System premieres on Wednesday, October 2, at 9pm on KQED 9. Or watch it on the PBS App or KQED Passport.

The Hunters Point Crane's Legacy Is Both Majestic and Troubling The crane is 450 feet tall and 730 feet long, so big it can be seen from three counties. It weighs as much as the Eiffel Tower. It’s an iconic piece of infrastructure, and for some, it’s a celebrated Bay Area icon. There’s even a whole fan website for the old crane, where they sell merchandise and tell some of its history. However, the legacy and effect of the crane are much more profound than its metal form.
