Fed survey finds interest rate cuts encouraged borrowing U.S. banks reported stronger demand for commercial and industrial loans in the fourth quarter of 2023, with the net share of banks reporting an increase turning positive for the first time in two years, according to the Federal Reserve's Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey. However, for the commercial real estate sector, banks reported tighter lending standards and generally unchanged demand. The survey results suggest that the Fed's interest rate cuts in 2023 may have encouraged business borrowing, although the effect on demand for other types of loans appeared limited.
