WHO/Europe Press Briefing from Moldova

Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, the World Health Organization Regional Director for Europe, visits Moldova on Tuesday, 22 March 2022

The Republic of Moldova is showing immense solidarity and playing a lifesaving role by welcoming hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war – most of them women and children.

However, the rapidly evolving situation is challenging the country’s capacity and resources, and Moldova needs urgent support to sustain and expand its efforts. Moldova also needs to ensure the health needs of its own citizens are met amid the strain being placed on health care systems.

Dr Kluge will meet with Moldova’s President, Speaker of Parliament, Prime Minister, Minister of Health and other officials and stakeholders, during his one-day visit.

The itinerary includes a visit to the main refugee centre in the capital Chisinau, as well as facilities offering critical health care to refugees. Urgent WHO health and medical supplies for Moldova will also be announced.

Members of the media in Moldova, both national and international journalists, are invited to a press briefing with Dr Kluge and Dr Ala Nemerenco, Minister of Health, hosted by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova and the WHO Moldova Country Office. The event will also be livestreamed; a link will be provided to media who RSVP / register.
