ACT-Accelerator Campaign Launch

Date and Time: Wednesday 9 February from 15:00 to 16:00 CET 

Subject: ACT-Accelerator Advocacy Campaign launch event 

This event aims to raise awareness of the ACT-Accelerator partnership’s achievements and build political support for the urgent financial needs of its agencies to scale up their vital work providing low and middle-income countries with tests, treatments, vaccines, and personal protective equipment.  

The event will launch a new financing framework agreed by the ACT-Accelerator Facilitation Council’s Finance and Resource Mobilization Working Group, which outlines a grant funding ask to support ACT-Accelerator agencies’ work for the most vulnerable countries.  

The framework sets out guidance on the ‘fair share’ of financing that richer countries should each contribute to the ACT-Accelerator’s global response. ‘Fair shares’ are calculated based on the size of their national economy and what they would gain from a faster recovery of the global economy and trade. 

Following remarks from WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, there will be pre-recorded and live speeches, including:

• H.E Cyril Ramaphosa, President, South Africa (Co-Chair of the ACT-Accelerator)   
• H.E Jonas Gahr Støre, Prime Minister, Norway (Co-Chair of the ACT-Accelerator)  
• H.E Xavier Becerra, Secretary of Health and Human Services, United States  
• H.E Fahad Bin Abdulrahman Al Jalajel, Minister of Health, Saudi Arabia   
• H.E Niels Annen, Parliamentary State Secretary, Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany 
• H.E Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Minister Delegate for Tourism, French Nationals Abroad and Francophonie, France 

The WHO Director-General, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway and other guests will be available to take media questions on the ACT-Accelerator campaign and the need for financing, following speaker remarks.

The new financing framework report will be available on Wednesday 9 February, together with details of ‘fair share’ asks, broken down by country, at https://www.who.int/initiatives/act-accelerator
