New training: Supporting EU children in care

In January and March we are running a brand new training session on supporting EU children in the care system. The training, which will last half a day, will serve as an introduction to the relevant EU legislation and will focus on how to resolve uncertainty for looked-after children and young people with EEA nationalities. Further training, covering EU derivative rights, will follow later in 2017. You can book all of our training online at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/coram-childrens-legal-centre-11100181140.

New fact sheet on local authority support for children with immigration status issues

We have a new fact sheet which provides information about legal issues relating to children in care whose immigration status is uncertain. There have been several recent cases in which local authorities have been fined for failing to address a child's immigration status issue in time, and before the child turned 18. This fact sheet outlines what a local authority's duties are and how they should best be undertaken. The fact sheet is available here: http://bit.ly/2ggy2zJ

School census data

Nursery schools will no longer be forced to collect details on the nationality and birth place of children as young as two following a Government U-turn over the controversial school census. The data collection, which is due to take place in January, will now no longer ask for country of birth or nationality data. Data collection for older children took place at the beginning of the academic year, but parents and carers can still request the removal of their child's data. For more information and template letters for such requests, see the Against Borders for Children website, at: https://www.schoolsabc.net/

If you have queries about these or other issues, please contact our advice line on 0207 636 8505 or email [email protected].
