One year until the deadline of the EU settlement scheme One year from today, on 1 July 2021, any EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen or family member who has not applied to the EU settlement scheme will become undocumented. This means they will lose their right to a home, work, and hospital care, and will lose access to a bank account, a driving license, and any benefits. A year from this deadline, Coram Children's Legal Centre has published a report looking at which children may not apply before the deadline, and what the UK government must do to stop that from happening. This report draws on our advice and casework since the EU settlement scheme was piloted in November 2018, including helping more than 200 children supported by local authorities in England and Wales to access the EU settlement scheme. The report was profiled by UK in a Changing Europe. Read Children left out? Securing children’s rights to stay in the UK beyond Brexit, or the executive summary here. No Recourse to Public Funds Conditions Last month, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Work and Pensions joined the growing coalition of civil society voices in asking for NRPF conditions to be suspended or scrapped. Due to coronavirus, certain groups including Zambrano carers and people with NRPF conditions have been granted temporary access to free school meals. Guidance on who can get free school meals is here. Do you want to add your voice to the campaign to make this change permanent, and to scrap the NRPF charge? You could write to your MP, sign a petition, or donate to the NELMA NRPF relief solidarity fund.
