Kids ages 5-11 begin getting vaccinated against COVID-19 in Minnesota.
| | Nov. 3, 2021 The first COVID shots went into kids arms in Minnesota Wednesday, hours after the official approval of the vaccinations for children from 5 to 11.
State Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm talked about the first vaccinations at a brief walk-in clinic at the Mall of America today.
"The excitement was just palpable and wonderful — to see the sense of a sense of relief and excitement on the part of the kids," she said. "They understand that this is a big deal. The fact that they feel some control is really a really pretty wonderful thing."
The supply went quickly, but health officials said that they believe that more than 250,000 doses could be available starting Friday and early next week, with appointments available through doctors, pharmacies and even schools.
"Above all else, this is a chance for kids to be kids," said Gov. Tim Walz. "They need to be in school. They need to be playing with their friends. They need to have sleepovers. They need to be at Nickelodeon Universe."
