Earth Month Champions!!

Have You Heard the Word?

Grades of Green was chosen as a 2022 California Nonprofit of the Year by Senator Ben Allen! We are so proud of the work that we do to educate and empower students to make a difference in their communities. It is an honor to be recognized by California state legislatures for the environmental impacts we are driving.

Three Cheers for Earth Month!

It's a wrap on Earth Month, and we couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you to ALL of our donors and sponsors for your support. WOW! 2022 Nonprofit of the Year and reaching our goal of raising over $20,000 in April  what an incredible month of environmental action and festivities!

Tacos & Tequila at Sunset

Grades of Green, Veggie Grill, and Nosotros Tequila came together to celebrate the Nonprofit of the Year award and for sparking environmental passion in students while raising funds to continue providing innovative programs to students, teachers, and schools. We are grateful to Grades of Green Board Member Julie David and her husband Richard for opening up their home and hearts to celebrate Grades of Green and the Eco-Leaders we empower.

One Percent for the Greener Good

We are proud to announce that Lazy Acres Natural Market has once again chosen Grades of Green as a 1% for the Planet Partner. Every time you purchase Lazy Acres Private Label items at the Hermosa, Long Beach, and Santa Barbara locations, 1% of the sales will go to Grades of Green! Thank you to Lazy Acres for their continued commitment to Mother Earth and the Student Eco-Leaders who create greener and cleaner communities for all!

Eco-Leaders in Action

Making Waves to Protect the Ocean

Grades of Green Eco-Leader Rylee G, in partnership with Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, Heal the Bay, and Sierra Club PV/Southbay, led a successful Earth Day beach clean-up event! Over 200 participants showed up at Torrance Beach, California to learn about the impacts of plastic and litter on our oceans and help clean the shoreline, sand and beach park. Rylee spoke to the participants about the impacts of Grades of Green and the importance of taking action to help protect the planet. Way to "Seas the Day" Rylee!

This Little Light Sparks Connections

The students at Mary Bragg Elementary in Cerritos, California and GSS Tudunwada in Abuja, Nigeria continue to build connections while interacting with each other abroad. In partnership with This Little Light Africa, students from both schools have shared about their cultures while planning environmental projects through emails, videos, and interactive activities. Both teams look forward to meeting together for the first time LIVE on Zoom on May 18th. Together, the students will pursue ideas on how to beautify and green their learning spaces. We can't wait to see what these teams accomplish working together across the globe!

Live More and Waste Less

Manhattan Beach Grades of Green students celebrated Earth Day by teaming up with the Waste Less Shop for a fun-filled community event.

The Waste Less Shop is a refill and sustainable living store that provides customers with plastic free and waste free options for many common household products.

Grades of Green students Lila M, Sienna A, and Claire K spent the afternoon informing customers about our student led programs and playing fun, informative games like “How Long 'Till It’s Gone” to teach community members about the importance of reducing their use and keeping waste out of the landfill.

Cooking Up Less Food Waste

Eco-Leaders from Grades of Green are taking action from coast to coast to make an everlasting environmental impact. The students at Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School in Bayside, New York have been working to implement a food donation station at their school. However, local laws have prevented the team from fully implementing this project, which led them to speak with their local government. The students have gained support from local community members and state senators to approve food donations taking place in New York City Schools.

Now this team needs your help! The students are aiming to collect 500 signatures by the end of the campaign. To support, sign the petition below and help them change laws within their local government!

Launch Program Updates

Toolkit of the Month: Campus Food Rescue

This issue's Toolkit of the Month is inspired by our fearless Eco-Leaders from Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School. Despite the obstacles in their way, they are trying to reduce their carbon footprint, lower their waste production, and share leftover food with those who need it most. Join them by doing your own version of Campus Food Rescue.

You can find plenty of fun and impactful Eco-Toolkits available through Grades of Green's Launch program. Educators and students use these flight-ready project toolkits to create long-lasting environmental impact — and so can you!
