How you can help the homeless when temperatures soar
The difference between Winter Shelter Operations and Summer Hot Patrols is only 30 days and sometimes less. We officially shut down Coldest Nights in the middle of April, and, with the arrival of May, we are already flirting with 90 degree temperatures. This means it’s time to get out and start our Hot Patrols. While we certainly worry about the homeless during the winter months, summertime can actually be equally as dangerous for those living on the streets.
As temperatures soar to 90 and above, so do associated health risks. Heat stroke, dehydration, occurrences of athlete’s foot, and exhaustion will all increase. Hoping to keep a few more people out of our hospital emergency rooms, Murfreesboro Rescue Mission will be on the streets handing out bottles of water to those who may struggle with the basic necessities of life. We’ll start with 300 bottles and go from there. MRM is now ready to start accepting donations for water. If you would like to buy the water, please get the handheld bottles because they are easy to hand out.
Today, we learned of the home going of our friend, brother and fellow board member, Dr. Jay Werthmuller, and our hearts are heavy. Dr. Werthmuller was always busy but made time to lend his gifts and talents by working on a shelter for the homeless. We admired him and have been inspired by his passion. We loved Jay and will miss him dearly. We will never forget the opportunity we had to serve with one of God’s choice servants. Please pray for Murfreesboro Rescue Mission, the family of Dr. Werthmuller, Summer Hot Patrols, and the development of our future shelter.
Sincerest thanks, Ed Grimes Executive Director |
