The Australian Business Review

Good morning,

Pub billionaire Bruce Mathieson has lifted his stake in troubled Star Entertainment for the second time in as many months despite rising concerns that revelations at the second Bell inquiry threaten its Sydney casino licence.

Meanwhile, Orica boss Sanjeev Gandhi and union leader Paul Farrow have warned energy-intensive industries are “genuinely living on the brink” with other manufacturers likely to suffer the same fate as plastics giant Qenos which collapsed this week.

And the sacked chief executive of ASX-listed Dubber, Steve McGovern, has been embroiled in a string of historical legal disputes involving allegations he failed to pay back business and personal loans, The Australian can reveal.

The Markets

Five things to know this morning

  1. ASX to fall. Inquiry into casino group Star’s licence suitability continues amid billionaire play. US markets mixed, bond yields rise on latest housing data. Netflix dives despite beating profit estimates.
  2. The federal Labor government’s intervention into the gas market has damaged Australia’s reputation as a secure investment location and stable supplier of energy, says ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Lance.
  3. After five years running Seven West Media, CEO James Warburton has handed over the reins to Jeff Howard who, as a top priority, will have to contain the scandalous claims plaguing investigative program Spotlight.
  4. Billionaire Solomon Lew has tightened his grip on Myer, using creep provisions to snatch another 3 per cent of the retail chain for his listed fashion and investment vehicle Premier Investments.
  5. Victoria’s Portland aluminium smelter can be globally competitive in the long term if Australia keeps up the pace of greening its electricity grid, according to Alcoa chief executive Bill Oplinger.
