| | What's next? Crabs and chips? The new "Top Boy" season notwithstanding (though if you're a fan, hit me up), the United Kingdom's been on my mind. That's largely due to UK and US trade reps visiting Baltimore tech tentpole Fearless' headquarters earlier today. You're not reading that wrong: Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the UK's secretary of state for international trade, joined Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and US Trade Representative Katherine Tai in Baltimore for conversations on the future of transatlantic trade. As part of that visit, they visited Fearless' offices at Spark Baltimore and learned, in Sec. Trevelyan's words, "how innovative business and trade can support minority, gender and under-represented communities on both sides of the Atlantic." We hope to follow up with more details on this visit soon. In the meantime, the visit does beg some questions about how cities like Baltimore — that is, US cities whose tech sectors don't often receive international attention, even as they deal with similar racial and social inequities to global cities like New York or London — could benefit from the new Atlantic Charter. Should Baltimore pursue closer economic ties to UK cities? What lessons could the birthplace of redlining learn from a country whose investors, like those here, disproportionately neglect Black entrepreneurs? What does Brexit mean for any of those relationships? And how can Black Americans and Britons alike benefit from equitable international trade, if such a concept is even possible?
