In a statement today, the department said it would "transition away" from using facial recognition software to create an account in the coming weeks. Instead, the IRS said, it'll be developing a new process and continue working with "cross-government partners" for authentication methods. "The IRS takes taxpayer privacy and security seriously, and we understand the concerns that have been raised," Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. "Everyone should feel comfortable with how their personal information is secured, and we are quickly pursuing short-term options that do not involve facial recognition."
