The Lunch Line: Mark Zuckerberg-backed group a player in N.O. sheriff's race

By Bob Warren

All aboard? Interested in passenger rail service between New Orleans to Baton Rouge? Canadian Pacific Railway could soon own the tracks between the cities and is committed to re-introducing service on the line, Tony McAuley reports.

Big money: The red-hot Orleans Parish sheriff’s race between incumbent Marlin Gusman and challenger Sharon Hutson is drawing national attention -- and money. A group backed by Facebook mogul Mark Zuckerberg recently donated $200K to a PAC supporting one of the candidates. Matt Sledge has the details.

'Permitting' Carnival: Started making your Carnival plans yet? There have been concerns about how COVID might impact the region's signature party in 2022 (after canceling 2021). But the city’s planned lottery for permits to sell stuff along the route could be a positive sign.

Smokin' again: Wayne Jacob's Smokehouse in LaPlace was getting the kind of publicity you just can’t buy – a featured spot on “Food Paradise,” the popular Travel Channel food show. Trouble is, the show was airing just as Hurricane Ida was battering the business. And now that Wayne Jacobs has reopened, the hustle is on to fill hundreds of orders that came in after that show, Ian McNulty reports.

Hope you enjoyed the Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us today.
