Kangaroo Island residents fighting to save hooded plovers |

When Australians think of plovers, often a pesky black and white bird that swoops children in schoolyards comes to mind. But along South Australia's coastline lives a much more pleasant-natured bird and its existence is severely under threat. An increase in car beach access on Kangaroo Island, which is home to around 200 adult hooded plovers, has already seen the population decline, according to conservationists. |

| It seems a lot of trouble to pull apart the Urrbrae Gatehouse brick by brick before re-erecting it about half a kilometre away, but according to an Adelaide stonemason, it will be easier than it sounds. Following significant public backlash to its plans to demolish the heritage-listed 1890 building in the city's south to make way for roadworks, the state government this week said it would pay to dismantle and rebuild it nearby. |
