Shell shocked: The rise of Lord Fairfax When a wild animal makes its way into a populated area, the reactions from locals can be pretty extreme. Bears are regularly tranquilized and tagged before they can make a mess in a town, but what happens when a 65-pound snapping turtle gets loose? Well, that’s exactly what happened in the town of Alexandria, Virginia, when residents discovered the enormous reptile crossing a residential street. The animal, dubbed Lord Fairfax after the county he found his way into, startled a number of people with his aggressive displays and violent biting. But animal control quickly took over the situation and took the turtle into custody. Lord Fairfax will now have a comfortable place to live at the Virginia Zoo, where he is expected to grow up to 200 pounds over the course of his life. Yep, apparently, Lord Fairfax is still just a kid. Otherwise, they would have called him “King Fairfax.” Heavy is the crown, indeed. Once you see how scary these turtles can be, you won’t be surprised why they called him “Lord.” Tap or click here to watch a wildlife expert tango with a snapping turtle. → |
