30 years fall of the Berlin Wall: then & now
1989 - The fall of the Wall
The Berlin Wall fell on the evening of 9 November 1989. Countless East and West Berliners made history this night. They climbed over the concrete walls, surged through the narrow passages, hammered their way through the wall and re-conquered their city as a whole. The images of this historic event were seen around the world.

2019 - 30 years later
Today, 30 years on, Berlin is no longer a walled city, but a cosmopolitan city. Since then, millions of visitors have made their way to the German capital to witness this change. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new spaces were created – wastelands that residents and visitors adjudged to be their creative freedom: the art scene in Brunnenstrasse, the Berlin start-ups on Moritzplatz, or simply access to the Spree.

What is Berlin HANDSHAPE?
Berlin HANDSHAPE brings two strangers from different backgrounds together in conversation.
A piece of clay, held by both, symbolises the moment of their interaction. And will stay behind as a witness of their handshake, their encounter. A real Berlin HANDSHAPE.

HANDSHAPE meeting points
Documentation Centre, Bernauer Str. 111, 13355 Berlin - Tuesday to Sunday 12.30 am to 5.30 pm
