Thanksgiving is week after next and Christmas is right around the corner. For those ready to dive into the holiday spirit, check out these upcoming events to add to your seasonal "must do" list. Lights in the Sky has returned to Boyne Mountain’s SkyBridge just in time for the holidays. More than 150,000 lights will twinkle across the world’s largest timber-towered suspension bridge until April 2025. In downtown Detroit, hop aboard the "Holly Trolly"—a holiday themed streetcar— for a quick ride to five Santa-approved stops in the city. While you're in Mid-Michigan, here are five local businesses to help you get a head start on Christmas. Not ready to transition to the winter season just yet? Mackinac Island's annual Christmas Tree Lighting set to ring in the season |
Holiday spirit: Mackinac Island will soon undergo a dazzling transformation for the holiday season. Mark your calendar for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 6. Join a sing-along around the tree as locals and visitors stand together as the sun sets. Be sure to stick around throughout the weekend for the Christmas Bazaar. Grab your spot: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources opens reservations for campsites, lodging and harbor slips up to six months in advance. That means that Memorial Day Weekend spots for 2025 will be opening up on Saturday, Nov. 23. Under the stars: The Hike the Lights series has become so popular that the Muskegon Luge Adventure Park is hosting a special hike this Friday, Nov. 15, for the supermoon. The scenic guided walk will take hikers along a 2.5 mile trek to Lost Lake, one of the park’s hidden gems. |

High grocery prices helped Trump win Michigan. But what can he do about them? |
Costly: Campaigning on a message of turning an “economic nightmare into an economic miracle,” Donald Trump broke down the blue wall and swayed people in swing states like Michigan. A frustration over high prices helped Trump win, despite experts saying the president has little power to lower grocery costs and some of his policies could worsen inflation. Regardless of who’s in office, most food prices won’t go back to where they were before the pandemic because they don’t typically deflate. Grocery costs are growing more slowly – a 1.2% increase this year compared to 11% in 2022 – but Americans will likely feel the sting of the sudden jump for a few years. But Trump told voters that “inflation will vanish completely” under his plan to slap tariffs on imported goods and deport millions of undocumented immigrants. Elon Musk’s super PAC spent around $200 million to help elect Donald Trump, according to a person familiar with the group’s spending, funding an effort that set a new standard for how billionaires can influence elections. |

Sky gazing: This November’s full supermoon, also called the Beaver Moon, will be the last of four consecutive supermoons this year. Try to enjoy the sky show this week—we won’t get to see another supermoon until October 2025. The moon will be officially full on Friday, but we’ll be treated to the look of a full moon Thursday through Saturday this week. Getting warmer: One strong climate trend in Michigan is a warmer fall season, especially for October. But not all Michigan cities are warming at the same rate. In fact, southern Lower Michigan is warming at a faster rate than the Upper Peninsula. Here's a look at what could be causing the warmer weather. Twisters: A weekend storm system that blew across Michigan was responsible for a second tornado, the National Weather Service confirmed. The second twister, confirmed in southwest Gratiot County, was also rated a weak EF-0, with a path just 10 yards wide. |

In health: Last month, Grand Rapids announced it is kicking off its lead reduction initiative in collaboration with the Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan. $500,000 of the total $1 million investment will address lead concerns in the city’s Third Ward as part of the Participatory Budgeting Grand Rapids. In case you missed it: One of the largest international stroke risk studies conducted has found an increased risk for people who regularly drink coffee, fruit juices and soda. |
