Sample job description: Credentialing specialist

The relationship of hospital size, medical staff services department size, and number of credentialed practitioners isn’t a sharp line. MSPs’ roles are fluid.

Well-formed job descriptions foster consistency that counterbalances these uncertainties. MSPs can reference the descriptions to understand their responsibilities, budget worktime, and address requests from practitioners that fall outside their purview. Managers can use the information to establish expectations, create time-management logs, and determine appropriate staffing levels.

In long-term care credentialing, be rigorous yet realistic

Published 7/26/17

Increasingly, mergers and acquisitions are making strange bedfellows of acute, ambulatory, and postacute care facilities. As these newly aligned entities share practitioners and best practices, formalized credentialing is catching on across the care continuum.

In many nontraditional environments, the rise of credentialing is outstripping the development of regulatory and accreditation standards, leaving organizations with scant guidance on how to foster consistency across their spectrum of services and align their vetting practices with setting-specific needs. The long-term care industry is a prime example of this incongruity.

Sample long-term care physician credentialing items

In long-term care, as in acute care, industry best practices (and, where applicable, accreditation standards) dictate that a credentialing process occur for all practitioners who deliver a medical level of care. This resource provides a rundown of items a nursing home might collect or verify during the credentialing process.

Study examines how the fourth year of medical school affects first-year residents’ performance

Published 7/24/17

The transition from medical school to residency is an aspect of physician training that has historically been overlooked in terms of research and modernization, according to Christopher J. Richards, MD, fellow in clinical instruction at Harvard Medical School in Boston. In fact, some have questioned the value of the fourth year of medical school and suggested outright eliminating it.

2018 CRC Symposium Case Study Competition

CRC is seeking a pioneering MSP, physician leader, or small team (up to three people) to present a compelling case study at the 2018 CRC Symposium, which will be held in February in Las Vegas, Nevada. Whether you’re a seasoned educator in search of a broader platform to share your expertise or a yet-to-present professional with big ideas, this is the ultimate opportunity.

Any MSP or medical staff leader who is currently involved in credentialing, privileging, peer review, or another important medical staff function is welcome to submit a case study application. The winning proposal will highlight a creative solution that the presenter(s) have helped implement at their organization. By imparting their in-the-trenches experiences and lessons learned, the chosen speaker(s) will shed light on an issue, practice, or principle that affects stakeholders across the modern medical staff landscape.
