So, we normally don't publish a newsletter on Tuesday, but the amount of news surrounding LSU today required a special edition. The Tigers made three staff hires and lost their starting quarterback. Enough for us to make an exception, right? Let's dive in. First, Brian Kelly made three key staff hires, starting with strength and conditioning coordinator Jacob Flint. Flint played for Kelly at Central Michigan and then followed him as an assistant coach from Cincinnati to Notre Dame. He spent the last five years as Notre Dame's co-strength and conditioning coordinator. He'll get his first chance to lead a department on his own. Then reports surfaced that Kelly was expected to hire Notre Dame special teams coordinator Brian Polian, the son of longtime NFL executive Bill Polian. He will replace Greg McMahon, who retired after a 40-year career that included long stints with the Saints and LSU. Lastly — and perhaps most importantly — on the staff front, former LSU assistant Frank Wilson resigned from McNeese State to rejoin the program as Kelly's associate head coach. He'll also coach a position to be determined later. The addition of Wilson energized former players and assuaged concerns about LSU's future recruiting efforts under Kelly. Wilson signed two top 5 classes in 2014 and 2015 as LSU's running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. That would've been enough for one day, but freshman wide receiver Deion Smith reportedly entered the transfer portal. Then starting quarterback Max Johnson announced he was entering the transfer portal. At the exact same time, Johnson's younger brother, tight end prospect Jake Johnson, said he was de-committing from LSU, pulling the No. 1 tight end in the country out of LSU's class. Not long after that, three-star wide receiver Decoldest Crawford re-opened his recruitment after receiving a scholarship offer from Nebraska — the school former LSU wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph happened to join late last week. Oh! And senior linebacker Damone Clark was named first-team All-Southeastern Conference, while junior kicker Cade York and senior left guard Ed Ingram received second team honors. OK.
