Four months ago, offensive line coach Brad Davis spent 12 hours on a bus as the LSU football team evacuated to Houston overnight with Hurricane Ida barreling toward the gulf coast. Davis still remembers the trip, and no one can forget what came next. LSU spent five days in Houston, practicing inside NRG Stadium before the first game. It then flew directly to Los Angeles for its season opener against UCLA. A lot has changed since then — Ed Orgeron's tenure ended, Davis was elevated to interim coach and Brian Kelly was hired as the permanent replacement — but in some ways the season has come full circle. That's because LSU announced Sunday it will play in the Texas Bowl on Jan. 4 inside NRG Stadium against Kansas State, ending the season the same place where it began. Staff from the Texas Bowl and the Houston Texans helped LSU transport its entire operation then, and now the Tigers will reconnect with them in a bowl game. Frankly, LSU doesn't know much more than its destination at this point. The staff is in flux as Kelly plans for next season, the early signing period in two weeks takes precedent over the game and the players have a few days off because of final exams. Davis has a lot to figure out, but everything we know right now is here, from staff changes to Davis' initial approach. If Davis remains on staff next year, he'll have to quickly develop the offensive line, a group he took over midway through the summer. Kelly has a track record of producing NFL linemen, as our Leah Vann dove into this weekend. While LSU waited for its bowl selection, the Carolina Panthers fired offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Remember him? The man who helped design LSU's 2019 offense needs a job now. Thanks for reading. If you’re not a subscriber, please come join us. We’re running a great deal for you.
