The next chapter in the 128-year history of LSU football will be written by the winningest coach of perhaps the most storied program in the college game. Following the departure of Ed Orgeron on Saturday night, LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward needed less than 48 hours to land Orgeron's successor — Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly. Multiple sources confirmed to The Advocate on Monday night that the 60-year-old Kelly was the choice with the official announcement expected Tuesday. Kelly has been a head coach for three-plus decades at four different universities and his 263 wins make him one of the winningest active coaches in college football. A Massachusetts native, Kelly has compiled a 113-40 record in 12 seasons at Notre Dame with a 54-9 mark the past five seasons. The Irish are 11-1 this season and were sixth in last week's College Football Playoff rankings. One of those victories made him the Fighting Irish's winningest coach, surpassing legendary coach Knute Rockne. Woodward pulled off a huge surprise in bringing Kelly to LSU considering Notre Dame still has a shot at making the CFP playoffs pending the outcome of this weekend's conference championship games. While lots of folks were fixated on the possibility of Woodward enticing Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley to Baton Rouge, a notion Riley shot down Saturday night before bolting for USC on Sunday, things escalated quickly for LSU on Monday. Despite the angst of Tigers fans with Southern Cal's quick courtship of Riley, columnist Scott Rabalais writes that Woodward ended up with a jaw-dropping hire. So, who is Brian Kelly? We have the five things to know about the coach who is expected to become the new leader of the LSU program. And, we have five things to know about offensive line coach Brad Davis, who will serve as the Tigers interim coach in their bowl game. Finally, on an eventful day, LSU stars Damone Clark and Cade York were honored by the Southeastern Conference for their play in the Tigers' 27-24 upset of Texas A&M on Saturday night.
