A tech-first state?

The Maryland Department of Health recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of Maryland being designated a so-called Technology First State. According to a press release, this signifies the state's dedication to prioritizing using assistive and remote technologies for individuals with disabilities, as well as aiming to improve their independence and overall quality of life. The concept of Technology First emphasizes making technology the primary option when discussing support for individuals and families, with the goal of fostering community engagement, social inclusion and self-determination.

A celebratory event hosted by the department's Developmental Disabilities Administration highlighted Gov. Wes Moore's Aug. 15 proclamation of Maryland Technology First Day. It also featured presentations by technology providers and users and a resource fair that presented technology solutions tailored for individuals with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities.

What do you think of this designation? Does it have the power to move the needle in the right direction? Let us know by replying to this email or emailing [email protected].
