Los Angeles July 8, 2020 Letter from the editor: Since last October I have been interviewing various artists and art workers in Los Angeles to document and amplify their local work. It's been a lot of fun, and I am deeply grateful for how generous people have been with their answers and time. For this week's edition, I spoke with artist Jaklin Romine, who explains why "the power of photography is real." For her most recent project, she's been flagging the physically inaccessible art spaces and galleries around Los Angeles. Over the July 4 weekend, airplanes spelled out urgent messages like "RELEASE" and "#DefundHate" over 80 detention facilities around the United States. The Los Angeles-based artists Cassils and rafa esparza were behind the project, and invited a total of 80 artists to brainstorm the skytyped messages. See the images here. There are three more days to check out this Dominique Fung exhibition at Nicodim Gallery, which writer Isabel Ling describes as a "respite from the exhausting emptiness of the cult of authenticity." You can explore the work online. Thanks as always for reading, An interview series spotlighting some of the great work coming out of Los Angeles.
