Letter from the editor:
It's been pretty great to see how Los Angeles artists are putting together inspiring projects during the pandemic, from Patty Chang's open call for fears to Alan Nakagawa's participatory haiku project. (You still have time to submit to both.)
On Thursday, Kathryn Garcia, another Los Angeles-based artist, will be leading a guided meditation through art. You can read more about that in our roundup of online events hosted by some of this city's beloved spaces.
A week after Los Angeles's Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) laid off all of its part-time employees, it furloughed nearly all full-time staff. Museums across the nation, including MoMA and the Whitney Museum, are taking similarly heartbreaking measures.
Working with Jack Sjogren (also LA-based!) on his latest comic was a high point of my week. In it he shares his story with Hyperallergic and how he's grown as a comic artist, while making a moving case for supporting Hyperallergic and its writers. If you haven't already, consider becoming a member (no contribution is too small)—in the words of Sjogren, believe in the "power of stories"! Your support will help us survive and thrive during this challenging time.
