Floyd protests, looters spill into St. Paul; Minneapolis protest to take place tonight. After a night of a mix of peaceful protests and mass looting and destruction of businesses, tensions rose again earlier today -- in St. Paul as well as Minneapolis. St. Paul police confronted protesters and looters Thursday afternoon in the city’s Midway neighborhood as demonstrations spread across the river. St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter is urging people to stay away from the area and remain home. In Minneapolis, another protest is set for 5 p.m. downtown. COVID-19 in Minnesota today: 967 dead, 22,647; Floyd protests may drive spread. As thousands of people, some wearing masks and some not, gathered on streets to protest Floyd’s death, health officials say they anticipate a spike in coronavirus cases stemming from the protests. Officials on Thursday reported 35 new deaths tied to COVID-19. The number hospitalized rose to 606; those in intensive care fell to 242, down 18 from Wednesday and the lowest it’s in several days. — Jiwon Choi, MPR News |
