Dear Reader,
Last month, Forward Editor-in-Chief Jodi Rudoren shared an incredible story in her newsletter. Like so many New Yorkers, Jodi experienced terrible flooding in Hurricane Ida and lost some of her treasured possessions — including the hard copy of her first-ever front-page byline at The New York Times, published in 1998. Just a few weeks later, Bob Cumins, an accomplished local photographer, sent her something in the mail: a pristine copy of the front section of the Dec. 13, 1998 edition of The Times. The note from Bob read, “From my archive to yours.”
At the Forward, we understand the importance of archival records. Whether it’s a personal collection like Jodi’s or a communal one like the Forward’s library of texts, photos, and recordings stretching back more than a century, archives connect us to our history in deeply significant ways. Your support today will help us keep the Forward’s archive running. Support our workThe Forward’s archive is an active, living memory of the Jewish American experience. Our exhibition, "PRESSED: Images from the Jewish Daily Forward," created in partnership with the Museum at Eldridge Street, is now available virtually on Urban Archive, giving people all over the world access to this amazing history.
As Jodi discovered when she explored her basement in the wake of Hurricane Ida, the things we save are the things that remind us who we are — and what’s important to remember. Donate today to support the Forward’s archive, and preserve our community memory for years to come.
With gratitude, Chana Pollack Archivist The Forward The Forward 125 Maiden Ln. New York, NY 10038 |
