City in focus: it’s London, baby
Voted forth in our annual Index survey, Londoners rave about their city – especially its culture, food and live music scenes – despite the UK capital hitting global headlines for political turmoil and rising crime. Only 6 percent of us said they had felt unsafe in the last 24 hours, compared to almost 80 percent who felt happy. Moreover, the Big Smoke came out as one of the most dynamic, diverse and creative cities on the planet. Brexit? What Brexit?
Need somewhere to stay?
It’s time to check out the Ace Hotel which is a four-star American import with rock ‘n’ roll credentials, on Shoreditch High Street.
Why go?
What started out in Seattle in 1999 as a hotel for creatives, has spread roots across the world and blossomed into one of the most fashionable hotel chains in the business. So it stands to reason that Ace’s London outpost would be situated in the creative lungs of the capital: Shoreditch. And rather than riding on the coattails of the neighbourhood’s heritage, Ace brought its own flair to the table, inviting local businesses to set up shop on site.
Amongst the Scandi-meets-industrial decor you’ll find an east London Juice Co dispensary, the stylish Bulldog Edition café and seasonal British fare at Hoi Polloi restaurant. Ace also has three bars, including Lobby (for cocktails, snacks and DJs), basement club Miranda and The Rooftop, which serves up some pretty spectacular views of the city. You'll often find various vogueish afterparties here, but if you prefer privacy, you're well catered for.
In the foyer you'll spy a wealth of vinyl – something that continues in each room – along with a record player, minibar, TV and an acoustic guitar, should the mood strike. There’s no swimming pool, but there is a well-equipped gym and sauna, plus you can bring your pooch. Our take? In short, you’d be pretty hard-pressed not to fall in love just a little with this place.
Time Out tip
London is huge, sure, but loads of excellent locations are within a few miles of the Ace Hotel, so you should totally take advantage of their free bike rental policy. Book ahead at the front desk, then venture out along the canal to Victoria Park (east) or Camden (west), ride north up Kingsland Road to Dalston, or get your bearings and do a circuit of the area.
Anything else?
If you can't get enough of your stay at Ace, forget slipping toiletries in your bag as a keepsake. If you like what you see in your room, take it with you! Everything is for sale, they'll simply charge you once you’ve checked out.

What's the neighbourhood like?
Artists, musicians and designers have been breathing life into this offshoot of the East End for yonks. Explore its winding streets and you'll find unique, independent shops, bars, galleries and even farms (there are two), to which all and sundry flock. Given its popularity – and proximity to the City – you'll also find high-end names and chains here, from Chanel to Urban Outfitters and Tramshed to a posh Pret (the black and gold one). There’s something for everyone here, but if you’re after a little more nitty-gritty than Shoreditch has to offer, head out to cultural hubs Walthamstow or Peckham, both of which are easily reachable on the Overground.
What's nearby?
Basically, if you want it, you can find it. Want to hang out in a kitsch caff filled with cats? Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium is round the corner. Or want to get a freshly baked bagel at 4am? Neighbouring Brick Lane has not one, but two 24-hour bagel shops – both London legends. In fact, you can dive into a ball pit (Ballie Ballerson), watch community theatre productions (Rich Mix), rummage through vintage bargain bins (Cheshire Street) and bowl (All Star Lanes) all within walking distance of the hotel.
