Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Spectrum News Rochester's
Brianna Hamblin

Keeping your cool in front of the camera is a special skill developed by reporters across America. Unfortunately for many women journalists, keeping your cool while being harassed by obnoxious trolls is a talent they've also been forced to learn.

We won't cheer the jerks who make this necessary, but we will cheer Spectrum News Rochester's Brianna Hamblin for handling a tough situation like an absolute champ.

Hamblin was with her cameraman Scott Barstow in a residential neighborhood — not broadcasting live yet but the camera was recording as they prepared for the segment.

“You’re beautiful as hell,” a man walking by said to Hamblin, who said “thank you” with a tight smile.

His commentary swiftly took an ugly turn, as he called out his love for "mulatto chicks," said he couldn't be trusted to be left alone with Black women, and declared Hamblin "sexy as f*ck."

That guy was focused on Hamblin's outward appearance, but we're most impressed with her sharp mind and steel spine. Kudos to her.

MEDIA LOSER:
Sarah Huckabee Sanders

Sarah Huckabee Sanders wants to convert her stint as former President Donald Trump's White House Press Secretary into a second governor in her family, and she's using a Trumpian playbook.

In an appearance Friday on Fox & Friends, Huckabee Sanders said if she were elected governor, she would not mandate masks or vaccines "because we believe in personal freedom and responsibility.”

She then penned an op-ed encouraging Arkansans to get the "Trump vaccine." Sanders wrote that she got the vaccine after feeling “reassured" that Trump had gotten the shot. What she didn't mention: that the former president was vaccinated in January but didn't publicly admit it until media broke the news weeks later -- all while Trump and his allies have discouraged masks and encouraged vaccine hesitancy.

Huckabee Sanders is one of many Republicans to brand vaccine refusal as a victory for personal freedom. There's no reason she couldn't have been touting the "Trump vaccine" months ago -- except the pandemic of cowardice infecting the GOP as they are literally willing to watch their constituents catch Covid to avoid contradicting Trump.

The A-Block

Partisan squabbles over a bipartisan commission

You didn't actually believe a Jan. 6 commission could be nonpartisan and nonpolitical, did you? Oh, you sweet summer child...

In an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) defended kicking Trumplican Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Jim Banks (R-IN) off the select committee, saying that it was necessary "to ignore the antics of those who do not want to find the truth."

Pelosi also told Stephanopoulos that she was considering appointing Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), and that appointment became official this weekend.

Banks complained about getting removed from the committee and took a few swipes at Kinzinger and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), whom he described as being willing to stick to Pelosi's narrative.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) had a similar line attacking Pelosi as being only willing to tolerate Republicans who "share her pre-conceived narrative." He also slammed Kinzinger and Cheney as "Pelosi Republicans."

Meanwhile, new U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said he would be “a fool to not be concerned” about the possibility that the events of January 6th could happen again.

'These are my people. And they're dying'

Arkansas-based physician Dr. Michael Bolding appeared on CNN this weekend to chat with Pamela Brown in what turned out to be an emotional warning to vaccine-hesitant viewers.

Bolding described in heartbreaking detail how some of his patients were suffering with Covid-19, even though they were only in their 20s and 30s and had been previously healthy.

"We are seeing 20 and 30-year-olds dying now from a preventible illness," said Bolding. “We are seeing people that cross-fit on Tuesday and are on a ventilator on Friday."

One of the toughest situations, Bolding said, was a patient who was very ill, possibly dying, asked for the vaccine, and he had to tell them that the time for that had passed weeks ago.
