Lyrella has been living in the NT for the last 18 years, where she pursued a career in commercial radio before joining ABC Radio Darwin as a producer and presenter in 2011. Since then, she's immersed herself in the community sharing local perspectives, opinions and stories. She hopes to continue being a part of the local dialogue as an Afternoons presenter. |

Did you know for instance the Japanese bombers that attacked Darwin harbour in 1942 were the same squadron behind the surprise strike on the US navy in Pearl Harbour? Did you have any idea the first attack in Darwin was one of more than 100 raids by the Japanese on Northern Australia during WW2?
This year marked the 79th anniversary of the first Japanese attack on Darwin, and each year we ask ourselves the same questions: Why don’t we know more about the attacks? And are the bombing of Darwin raids being taught in schools anymore?
I just wonder if it is time the story of the bombing of Darwin and the loss of more than 300 lives was made compulsory for all Australian students?
US president Joe Biden has been invited to next year’s 80th anniversary of the bombings - when not only the nation’s eyes but perhaps the world will be focused on our top end capital. Perhaps now is the time to start a dialogue on this important subject.
