Out of control, hub of help and islands of darkness
By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor OUT OF CONTROL: Want to hear Bob Dean's side of the story? A 9 minute, 50 second recording of our phone conversation with the Louisiana nursing home owner who sent 843 residents to ride out Hurricane Ida in a Tangipahoa Parish warehouse can be heard here. Related: A PAC that supports U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., has refunded Dean's $25,000 donation. HUB OF HELP: A concrete slab where a McDonald's restaurant once stood near Lakefront Airport in New Orleans has become a homegrown hub of help and fellowship in the wake of Ida. For a week now, the bounce rapper 10th Ward Buck and local actor Lucky Johnson have been giving away water, ice, gasoline and tailgate-prepared meals. ISLANDS OF DARKNESS: More than 90% of Entergy's customers in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge area have had their electricity restored since Hurricane Ida hit Aug. 29, the utility says. That leaves some difficult pockets of powerless homes and businesses, many of them in Jefferson Parish. You'll find these stories and more in the Front Page and on NOLA.com. Thanks for starting your day with us. D.B. |
