Lions end 7-game Thanksgiving drought in nail-biter over Bears |
Winning team: Dan Campbell and his Detroit Lions have eliminated yet another ugly statistic linked to the team’s past. The Lions snapped a seven-game losing streak on Thanksgiving in on-brand dramatic fashion, hanging on for a nail-biting 23-20 win over the Chicago Bears. Detroit (11-1) hadn’t won on the holiday since 2016, losing to these Bears three times in that span. On top of that, the Lions have now won 10 straight games, matching the franchise record set in 1934. Game day: A five-loss Michigan team heads to Columbus on Saturday, Nov. 30, to take on the rival Buckeyes, currently No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings. For fans driving south for The Game, here is what you need to know for game day, from tickets to traffic to tailgating and more. On the ice: The Detroit Red Wings are in the midst of their best stretch of defensive hockey this season, and they’re reaping the benefits. Take a look at how the team realized their best formula for success. |

Maps show heaviest incoming snowfall across Michigan, one spot could see 3 feet |
National Weather Service offices across Michigan have released a new set of snowfall forecast maps showing just how much accumulation we’re expected to get over the next few days. The highest is an area near Sault Ste. Marie in the Upper Peninsula, which could see up to 34 inches of snow by Sunday, National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists said. What to know: Friday and Saturday could be dicey travel days across the state. And another burst of widespread lake-effect snow could make roads messy Sunday into Monday, too. Periodic shots of Arctic air are expected to keep all of us feeling wintry for at least the next week, the NWS said. Staying safe: No one plans to slide off the road, get stuck in a snowbank, or find themselves waiting for a tow truck in freezing temperatures. But if that happens to you, you’ll be glad you took an extra few minutes to be prepared. It’s worth brushing up on what you should have packed in your vehicle as a winter emergency kit. |

Why is Michigan facing a growing shortage of home health aides? |
At home care: Home health and personal care aides are facing the largest expected shortage in the health care industry, according to the 2024 Michigan Healthcare Workforce Index published this spring by the Michigan Health Council. The industry is projected to face a shortage of more than 170,000 workers over the next decade. According to the workforce index, aides are facing some of the worst forecasted worker shortages and turnover. Pay for home health aides remains a significant roadblock—despite facing some of the best wage growth since 2012 (up 40%). Nationally, the median salary for home health and personal care aides was $33,530 as of May 2023, or about $16 per hour according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In Grand Rapids: A fund that invests in early to mid-stage companies in the health care, advanced manufacturing, information technology and financial technology companies that are owned by entrepreneurs of color has announced investments in three new companies. |

New county-funded mobile homes arrive for families facing homelessness |
New homes: In its latest project to help add affordable housing in the area, Kalamazoo County is opening up new mobile homes for low-income residents. Kalamazoo County’s Public Housing Commission launched the project in July as a way to quickly add needed housing in the area. Funding comes from the county’s housing millage. Moving in: Hope Network on Tuesday, Nov. 26, welcomed the first tenants of Eastpointe Commons, a $40 million, 118-unit apartment building serving low-income residents in Grand Rapids. The first 62 units are now complete, with 22 one, two and three-bedroom units designated as Permanent Supportive Housing units. In case you missed it: Ypsilanti has reopened a daytime shelter at 100 Market Place for the season and announced daily, overnight shelter for the first time ever across a few Ypsilanti churches starting in December. The city approved $50,000 in funding each for the daytime warming center at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse and the overnight shelter at St. Luke’s. |
