Inn that hosted Millinocket wedding reception cited for violating Maine virus gathering limits

  • The state has given the Big Moose Inn an “imminent health hazard” citation, according to Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. About 65 guests attended the Aug. 7 wedding reception, exceeding the state’s current 50-person limit on indoor gatherings.

Thirty-two cases have now been linked to the wedding, for which the ceremony took place at the Tri Town Baptist Church in East Millinocket, Shah said. The virus has infected people as young as 4 and as old as 78. Seven of the 32 people who have been infected are under 18, he said.

  • Mainers submitted 2,500 new jobless claims for the week of Aug. 9 to Aug. 15, according to data released Thursday morning by the Maine Department of Labor. Since March 15, Mainers have received $1.38 billion in jobless benefits, according to the Maine Department of Labor. It paid out nearly $74 million in all of 2019.

Fryeburg police chief who resigned had lied to investigators, documents show
  • The former Fryeburg police chief lied to a Maine State Police trooper during a 2018 criminal investigation, impairing his ability to testify as a credible witness in court and therefore perform the duties of his job. But he continued as chief until he faced a personnel investigation for a separate instance of alleged misconduct this spring and resigned last month, according to public documents and interviews with town and police union officials.
Maine to use $200M in stimulus money for small business grants

  • Maine will use $200 million in federal stimulus funds to provide grants to small businesses and nonprofits affected by the coronavirus-induced recession as part of a program that fell far short of a state panel’s aid recommendation. The grants could be a relatively small lifeline to Maine businesses and nonprofits, which are likely facing billions in cumulative losses due to the pandemic so far.
