This week, we revisit a classic show from 1996, originally performed live from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota, with The Turtle Island String Quartet and The New Coon Creek Girls.

Highlights include Garrison singing “My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose,” “Hickory Nut Ridge” by the New Cook Creek Girls,” “Jacu” by the Turtle Island String Quartet, and both groups joining on “The L&N Don’t Stop Here Anymore.” Plus, Bertha’s Kitty Boutique, Mournful Oatmeal, Lonesome Radio Theater, The Lives of the Cowboys, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. Since its inception in 1985, the Turtle Island Quartet has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles, and by devising a performance practice that honors both, the state of the art has inevitably been redefined. Cellist nonpareil Yo-Yo Ma has proclaimed TIQ to be “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground — authentic and passionate — a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.” The group was founded in San Francisco in 1985. The New Coon Creek Girls formed in 1979, carrying on the tradition of Lily May Ledford and the original Coon Creek Girls, who gained fame on the Renfro Valley Barn Dance in the 1930s. Though the lineup of the New Coon Creek Girls changed over the years, the quartet spent decades recording and performing, to the delight of bluegrass fans. The musicians for this broadcast: Vicki Simmons (bass), Dale Ann Bradley (guitar), Ramona Church Taylor (banjo), and Kathy Kuhn (fiddle).
