ASHRAE/IES 90.1-2016 Takes Effect as National Standard

Next month, the 2016 version of ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, takes effect as the national energy reference standard, based on a 2018 Department of Energy (DOE) ruling.

By February 2020, all states must adopt a commercial building energy code at least as stringent as the standard, or justify why they cannot comply. Lighting practitioners in states that are progressive in terms of energy efficiency may wish to familiarize themselves with its requirements.

This article by Craig DiLouie, LC, CLCP explores two key areas of 90.1-2016’s lighting section, which regulate lighting power and use of lighting controls, and then drills into major changes from the 2013 version.

IES to Host LCA Webinar on Wireless Controls January 16, 2020

From 12-1 PM ET on January 16, 2020, the Illuminating Engineering Society will host a webinar on wireless lighting controls produced by the Lighting Controls Association.

Wireless lighting control has matured to offer a powerful and versatile option for control communication. By replacing control wiring with radio signals, wireless devices and systems offer the same functionality and benefits while providing the distinctive benefits of installation cost savings and greater flexibility. With wireless control, the most advanced control systems can be implemented in both new and existing buildings.

Presented by OSRAM’s Gary Meshberg, LC, CLCP, LEED AP, IES, outgoing chair of the Lighting Controls Association, the seminar will present the major types of wireless approaches, equipment, applications, protocols, and design and installation considerations.

LCA Announces New Course on Energy Codes

The Lighting Controls Association (LCA) now offers EE203: Lighting Controls and Commercial Energy Codes, Part 3: ASHRAE/IES 90.1-2016 and IECC 2018, as a new course in its popular Education Express program.

This course provides a lighting controls compliance roadmap for the latest versions of the major energy standards. The course identifies all sections of the energy standards, describes the requirements, and provides decision trees to simplify understanding and compliance.

All Education Express courses are registered with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education System (CES) for Learning Units (LU)/Health, Safety, Welfare (HSW) credits, and the National Council on Quality in the Lighting Professions (NCQLP) for Lighting Education Units (LEUs). They is also required reading to prepare for NALMCO’s Certified Lighting Controls Professional (CLCP) certification exam.
