Let me tell you a story.

In 1872, Andrew Carnegie started his first steel business at age 38.

Through smart management and innovation…

That business soon became the world’s largest steel producer…

Making Carnegie one of the richest men in history — with an inflation adjusted fortune of over $309 billion (dwarfing both Bezos and Zuck).

But what most people don’t realize is…

Despite all his success and ambition…

Carnegie typically worked no more than 2 to 3 hours per day.

He worked mostly from home and rarely visited the office…

And was also known for taking lengthy vacations…

Including 3-4 month holidays in Scotland every summer .

He didn’t wait for “slow times” to step away either.

In fact…

During one of his empire’s most critical growth phases, Carnegie took a full year off to travel the world — enjoying the sights, sounds & flavors of Japan, China, India, Egypt, and much of Europe.

What’s even more interesting is...

While he was gone his business and bottom line continued to grow bigger than ever before.

Now, all this might seem a tad surprising…

Considering Carnegie had grown up dirt poor in Scotland before his family came to the U.S. to escape starvation…

And his first job in America was working in a cotton factory for $1.20 per week.

After all…

Most “rags-to-riches” stories we hear are about entrepreneurs grinding 70, 80, even 100+ hours a week to lift themselves from poverty.

But Andrew Carnegie looked at things… differently.

In his own words, from a now-famous 1883 essay…

“Your always-busy man accomplishes little; the great doer is he who has plenty of leisure.” - Andrew Carnegie

He had no interest spending his days in board rooms and stuffy office buildings

(He’d probably roll over in his grave at the thought of a ‘Zoom meeting’).

Instead, he prided himself on a lifestyle of freedom.

Traveling and experiencing other cultures…

Entertaining friends at his mansion on Manhattan’s ritzy Fifth Avenue…

And hiking, fishing, and hunting with his family in the Scottish countryside.

So how is it that a poor immigrant factory worker built such a massive business empire…

… while rarely working more than 15 hours per week?

The answer is actually pretty simple…

The richest entrepreneurs are often the ones who give their brains the most room to think (and recover).

Carnegie understood something today’s entrepreneurs tend to forget:

The big thinking, imagination, and strategic calculation required to grow a business rarely happens in meetings or hunched over a desk.

And it almost never happens if you’re “stuck in the trenches”…

Performing every role in your business from IT, to customer service, to marketing…

Or doing all the mundane daily tasks.

This is why Carnegie, and frankly all the wealthiest men of his time including John Rockefeller, were…

Masters of working ON their business. Instead of working IN it.

As his authorized biographer, David Nasaw, puts it:

“Carnegie was never a hard worker. He spent at least half his time in play, and let other men pile up his millions for him.”

How did he do that?

Well, for one thing…

Andrew Carnegie was one of the earliest pioneers of what I call the “A.D.E. Formula” — a simple system I personally use and teach all my clients to build Lifestyle Businesses so we can be rich in wealth, health, and happiness.
