Let the Madness begin

March Madness. It is here.

The NCAA men's tournament begins Tuesday with the first two First Four games in Dayton, Ohio. The women's tournament's begins Wednesday with a couple of First Four games, including one between Southern and UC San Diego at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday.

The LSU women of course don't play until Saturday. Late Saturday. Almost Sunday. The Tigers got saddled with a 9:15 p.m. tip against San Diego State. What gives, ESPN? This, and many other factoids, are chronicled in my annual March Madness: A to Z column.

March is not all about basketball. The LSU baseball team is coming off a sweep of Missouri to start SEC play, and this week heads to Texas for its first SEC road series. First, however, the 20-1 Tigers host UNO at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before heading to Austin. Here are the particulars:

------------------------------------

LSU baseball is coming off a good weekend at Alex Box Stadium, sweeping Missouri in its opening series of Southeastern Conference play.

To complete the sweep, LSU took down Missouri 10-5. LSU finished the day with 14 hits, and four different players finished with at least two hits. Redshirt sophomore right-handed starter Chase Shores only lasted 3⅔ innings, but LSU's bullpen finished off the win.

Here's what you need to know about Tuesday's game.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: LSU threw both of its midweek starters over the weekend. Junior left-hander Conner Ware and freshman right-hander William Schmidt combined to toss three innings, likely ruling both out for starts on Tuesday game. UNO swept Incarnate Word this past weekend.

------------------------------------

Back to women's basketball, where the biggest question is how healthy are two of the Tigers' three biggest stars: Flau'jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow? We've also got the facts on the four teams playing in Baton Rouge on Saturday: LSU, San Diego State, Florida State and George Mason.

March also brings the start of the postseason for gymnastics. We've got LSU's seeding and rotation going into Saturday's SEC Championships in Birmingham, with the No. 2 Tigers in the 7 p.m. session against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Florida and No. 7 Missouri. That meet will be on the SEC Network.

Finally, the No. 4 LSU softball team is also off to a tremendous start, 27-1 and 3-0 in SEC play after sweeping Kentucky over the weekend. Like baseball, the Tigers are also headed out for their SEC road opener at No. 13 Georgia this weekend, having demonstrated they can win in a variety of ways.

That's all for today, folks. May your brackets be bountiful and may the March Madness treat you to plenty of thrills.
