Like most clichés, this phrase tends to ring true. Especially in music.
I spent my teen years thrashing Supergrass albums. I knew every word, every chord, every transition from song to song. But I don't think I've listened to a full Supergrass record in 15 years. Until this week.
When I heard the reformed Britpop band were returning to Australia, I figured I'd better revisit their work. I wasn't prepared for how great it would be. Yes, it unearthed plenty of nostalgic feelings but, more to the point, it reminded me that they are a truly incredible band.
I felt a bit of an idiot for neglecting the band for so long. But it was such a treat to unlock a cache of music and memories that has laid dormant in my mind for over a decade.
I spend most waking hours trying to encourage people to embrace new music. But it's worth dedicating some time to the bands you haven't listened to in years: if they're half as good as Supergrass then the pay-off will be handsome. |
