Let’s revisit Mr Loverman, ahead of its television debut

Join me and Okechukwu Nzelu to discuss my book

Dear reader,

On Thursday 26 September, I’ll be joining the novelist Okechukwu Nzelu, to revisit my 2013 novel, Mr Loverman. The event will be staged live in London at Conway Hall, and livestreamed globally. I am very excited to say that Mr Loverman has been adapted into an eight-part drama series that will be broadcast on BBC One this autumn.

The novel follows the story of Barrington Jedidiah Walker, a seventy-four year old Caribbean Londoner leading a double life. A flamboyant, wise-cracking local character with a dapper taste in retro suits, Barrington is a husband, father and grandfather – but he is also secretly homosexual, lovers with his great childhood friend, Morris.

The book is an exploration of Britain’s older Caribbean community, set within the context of Barrington’s multi-generational family. It explodes myths and fallacies and shows how deep and far-reaching the consequence of fear and prejudice can be, while also celebrating a great and enduring love between two men.
