World Environment Day is taking place on 5 June, and this year we want to focus on beating plastic pollution!
Did you know that single-use plastic is a huge threat to our oceans and marine life? Plastic takes up to 400 years to decompose, meaning it stays in our oceans for a long time, posing a threat to sea turtles and other marine species who mistake plastic for food. When they eat plastic, they can choke and suffocate to death, or the buildup of plastic in their system might eventually poison them.
But there's more! Microplastics are another problem - small pieces of plastic that are broken down from larger pieces, which get eaten by plankton and fish. Eventually these microplastics travel up the food chain and get to us!
That's why this World Environment Day, we have to take action to beat plastic pollution. And the easiest way to do that is by cutting down on single-use plastic, which refers to plastics that are only used once before being thrown away. These include plastic bags, stirrers, straws and more.
Together, we can do our part to save our oceans and our planet. Let's use less plastic and connect to Earth together!
