Dear reader,

Did you know that Stephen Harper (the Lego-haired former prime minister who emigrated to a certain a bovine-forward city in his early 20s) grew up in Leaside? Did you also know that the neighbourhood’s big-box LCBO may be better stocked than the Beaux-Arts palace at Summerhill? As an early 20th-century suburb, Leaside was designed to be isolated from less wealthy corners of the city—think the Kingsway but with more moats and bulwarks in the form of valleys and cliffs. But the Eglinton Crosstown and its sparkling Laird station are raising Leaside’s profile.

Today, the district is far more open to the larger city—a green and highly walkable pocket of elegant new condo towers interspersed among the century homes. One such heritage property is Curb Appeal’s top post this week: a $3.4-million farmhouse with a funky dining room painted in the Leafs’ unmistakable blue.

Also in today’s newsletter: a sneak peek at the new designs for the spa at Ontario Place. And Mayor Chow moves to make laneway living more affordable.
