Learning Innovation invites Duke instructors and academic staff to join us for our first Emerging Pedagogies Summit from October 4 - 6. This Summit is an opportunity to create a hub of applied research activities and innovative practices around topics which are spurring important conversations in teaching and learning right now.

Sanjay Sarma’s kickoff keynote will inspire attendees about the exciting possibilities emerging in teaching and learning right now. A professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, Sanjay Sarma served as the Vice President for Open Learning at MIT for nine years. Learn more about Sanjay.

Last Spring we were starting to explore how generative AI would influence teaching and learning at Duke, and we published our initial guidelines (which have been recently reviewed and remain relevant). The LMS Transition Team will describe the current status of the transition to Canvas at Duke. This will include information regarding the timeline, instructor learning opportunities, migration, integrations and differences between Sakai and Canvas. Have a question you'd like us to answer? Submit it in advance here.

Stop by our celebratory kickoff event for a coffee and to learn more about Duke's new learning management platform. There will be opportunities to hear from some of our "early adopters" about their experience so far and see their current courses in Canvas. Learning Innovation staff will also be available to answer questions and even help you get started with logging in and orienting you to the new platform. You might even leave with a prize...

We are currently designing a workshop for teaching assistants using Canvas this fall. The workshop will cover Canvas basics, communication, grading, discussion forums, peer grading, and building assessments. The description is still under development but early registration is open.

Ed Discussion is an online discussion platform that centralizes class Q&A, supports equations, runnable code, annotated images, and more. This workshop provides instructors with an opportunity to learn more about incorporating these and other newer features of Ed. Hosted by Paul Essing from Ed Discussion.

Georgia Tech became a national leader in offering affordable online master’s programs at under $10,000 tuition for the entire program, proving that affordability and access is possible without sacrificing quality. Now, Georgia Tech is launching a college of lifetime learning. Dean Nelson Baker will discuss the evolution of lifetime learning, Georgia Tech’s journey in leadership in learning innovation, and what the future may hold.

Hilary Culbertson, a seasoned marketing and communications professional in adult education, has been named the first Senior Director of Marketing and Communications for Learning Innovation and Continuing Studies.

She will oversee marketing efforts to reach new lifelong learners globally with programs and services powered by digital education.
