Teaching Students In-Person and Online at the Same Time

This Fall, you may be asked to teach a course that simultaneously includes in-person and online students (sometimes called a hybrid, HyFlex, concurrent, or mixed modality course). We have created a new page on the Flexible Teaching website that provides an overview of ideas and tips for designing a concurrently taught class.

Getting Started with Gradescope
Every Thursday from August 5 - September 9, 12 - 1 pm EDT
Join an online workshop run by the Gradescope team and learn how you can use Gradescope to deliver and grade your existing assignments, whether online or in person. Gradescope will offer guidance on how to save time grading and get a clear picture of how your students are doing.

Getting Started With Sakai
Tuesday, August 10, 1 - 2:30 pm EDT
In this session, designed for instructors who have limited experience using Sakai, we will introduce and discuss best practices for using Announcements, Assignments, E-mail, Forums, and Resources. We will demonstrate the process for adding these tools to your Sakai site, and how to set them up for use.

Creating Videos with Panopto
Wednesday, August 11, 10 - 11 am EDT
Learn how to create and edit videos using Panopto, make simple edits when needed, implement best practices for accessibility such as video captions, and post the videos to be accessed in Sakai.

Designing Assessments That Put Learning First
Friday, August 13, 10 - 11:30 am EDT
During this workshop, we will use the principles of student-centered course design to discuss how instructors can design assessments that reflect their course goals, consider how to scaffold assignments, minimize cheating, and take student well-being into account. Participants will be able to share what has worked for them and discuss opportunities to design assessments beyond the traditional high-stakes exam or final paper.

An introduction to a new learning technology Duke is piloting - Ed Discussion.  A quick and easy drop in for class Q&A with superior functionality and usability. Ed Discussion supports full roster sync with Sakai and folks save considerable time compared to traditional email and forums.

Inclusivity & Accessibility
Sakai and Zoom now allow users to share how they prefer to be addressed by others. Here’s how to personalize your profile in Sakai and add and share pronouns in Zoom. You can also now enable live transcription and closed captions during your Zoom meetings.

Duke has decided to not continue with Piazza as a university-wide tool, though we’re pleased to offer two new alternatives: Ed Discussion (Pilot) and Sakai Conversations (Beta). Learn more about your options for online discussion forums in your course.

New Sakai Features & Integrations
You can now personalize your Lessons using name tokens. If you add {{firstname}}, {{lastname}} or {{fullname}} in the text editor, it will be replaced with the user’s name when viewed. Updates to VoiceThread AssignmentsGradescope, Library Course Reserves and Panopto integrations are now available.

Updated Office Hours

Our online open office hours have changed: join us every Monday from 1 to 3 pm EDT and Thursday from 10 am to 12 pm EDT at duke.zoom.us/my/dukelearninginnovation. No registration is needed, just join during the listed hours.

Michael Chen’s Pandemic Pedagogy Research Symposium presentation — Understanding the Role of Digital Literacy in Student Motivation and Connectedness During COVID-19 — was featured in the June 17 edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Teaching newsletter.
EdScoop noted that giving students flexibility was a recurring theme throughout the Pandemic Pedagogy Research Symposium.
CBS 17 interviewed Dominic Tanzillo and Nick Saba about their Space Medicine course, which was developed with support from Learning Innovation. 
The Duke Chronicle explored some of the courses that will remain online for Fall 2021, including Carry the Innovation Forward awardee Rebecca Ewing’s Spanish course.
