Designing for All: A Case Study in Building Accessible Workbooks

Our Learning Experience Design team was tasked with moving Rediscovering the Heart of Methodism (RHM)—a five-course legacy project between Duke Divinity School and LILE—from its original WordPress site to Coursera. It quickly became clear that the course workbooks—a key component of the original courses—were not accessible to screen readers. In collaboration with Duke web accessibility, the team developed an efficient process for building accessible documents.

This spring, LILE launched a new Community of Practice (CoP) for Innovative Grading and Assessment at Duke that brings together 11 instructors who are actively implementing innovative assessment and grading strategies in their courses. Facilitated by LILE teaching consultants, the CoP provides a structured yet flexible environment where cohort members can learn from one another, refine their practices, and ultimately share their insights with the greater Duke community.

The Center for Applied Research and Design in Transformative Education (CARADITE) recently launched Portraits of Practice, a new series documenting innovative teaching and learning at Duke University. This series amplifies the human(e)-centered narratives of students and educators engaging in transformative education through curiosity, care, and critical inquiry. 

This inaugural publication, "Let’s Not Know Together:" A CARADITE Portrait of Practice About Generative AI in Writing 201, explores the complex and evolving relationship between generative AI and student writing.

Lile attended the launch party for Associate Director of Faculty Development and Applied Research Remi Kalir's new book Re/Marks on Power: How Annotation Inscribes History, Literacy, and Justice. Re/Marks explores the question: "What if annotation were reimagined as a critical and civic literacy that can inscribe public memory, struggles for justice, and social change?" 

Kalir was also recently interviewed on the Imperfect Offerings podcast about his book and other ideas on student writing.

Lile got to practice their annotation skills during an "annotation jam" at the launch party.
