What's making news in New Orleans?
By Chad Calder | Staff writerLOGO DISPUTE: Dong Phuong bakery has long been loved by locals for its king cakes and pistolettes, and its acclaim spread further in 2018 when it was named one of that year's James Beard America's Classics. But the signature look of its brand, whether it's on its cardboard cake boxes, shopping bags, delivery trucks and even a mural, are going away, thanks to a legal dispute with the couple who designed them. SKETCHY SECURITY: A state regulator has slapped Hank's Seafood & Supermarket in the 9th Ward with a $20,000 fine for allowing an unlicensed security guard with a checkered past to guard the store. The store has been under increasing pressure this week as armed members of the New Black Panther Party and others have protested the shooting of a man by a store manager in October. DIVVY UP THE SPOILS: If the proposed $250 million casino resort near Slidell ever comes to pass, the expected $7.5 million to $9 million it brings in each year in parish tax revenue will end up in the hands of many local entities. We've got a look at the new agreement about who would get what. You can find these stories and more in today’s Front Page and on NOLA.com. Thanks for starting your week with us. CC |
