#6 California Assembly Bill 5 in for a Bumpy Ride with TruckersSacramento, CA California trucking fleets don’t agree with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who says that AB5, a new California labor law, he signed into law on Sept 11 is a “landmark legislation for workers and our economy.” Rather, the California Trucking Association (CTA) argues in its federal lawsuit that the bill “runs afoul of federal law.”
#7 California Uber Drivers Survive Motion to Dismiss, Lose Preliminary InjunctionSan Francisco, CA On December 16, Judge Edward Chen of the Northern District of California denied Uber’s Motion to Dismiss a class action California labor lawsuit that claims Uber drivers were misclassified as independent contractors under standards set out in Dynamex Operations West, Inc. v. Superior Court. However, in Colopy v. Uber Techs Inc., Judge Chen also denied the drivers’ Motion for a Preliminary Injunction. The injunction would have required the ride-hailing giant to begin to treat drivers as employees immediately.
#8 Johnson & Johnson Resolves Hip Implant Lawsuits for $1 Billion DollarsDallas, TX: Johnson & Johnson has come up with $1 billion dollars to settle as many as 95 percent of the 6,000 lawsuits filed by patients who needed to have metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip implant devices removed due to severe pain. This amount includes a prior settlement for over $400 million.
#9 Seroquel Side Effects for the ElderlyPearblossom, CA Seroquel is a neuroleptic indicated for the treatment of bipolar disorder—and like most drugs carries a host of Seroquel side effects, including diabetes, tardive dyskinesia and even birth defects. However, there is a little-known use for Seroquel off-label that concerned the daughter of one Alzheimer's patient for whom she was caring.
#10 Lupron: Do the Risks Outweigh the Benefits?Las Vegas, NV Lupron has not received the same widespread media attention to which other medications have been subjected, but for some patients, Lupron side effects can be devastating.
