#1 Zetia and/or Statins: The Good, the Bad and the UglyHalle-Wittenberg, Germany Can a drug designed to curb heart attacks also cause heart attacks in some people? Apparently, it's possible with statins or medication like Zetia when used in combination with a statin. Statins are designed to lower the "bad" cholesterol thought to be a contributing factor for heart attack and stroke, while leaving the so-called "good" cholesterol to do the good work that good cholesterol, ultimately, does.
#2 Class Action Toxic Tort Lawsuit Filed in Camp LeJeune Water Contamination CaseWilmington, NC On August 14, Donald Stringfellow filed a class action toxic tort lawsuit in the Eastern District of North Carolina, alleging that he and others stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune suffered injuries because of their exposure to contaminated water. The lawsuit may ultimately include thousands of Marines and civilians who lived on base between 1953 and 1987 and were exposed to water containing cancer-causing chemicals like benzine, vinyl chloride, trichlorethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE).
#3 Maker Of “Neuro” Drinks Agrees To Pay $500,000 In Fines and Restitution Neurobrands LLC, the Santa Monica-based maker of the “Neuro” line of drinks, has agreed to a permanent court injunction that requires it to change its marketing practices. The company will also pay $500,000 in penalties and restitution as part of a settlement with local prosecutors.

#8 Two More Philips CPAP Sleep Machine RecallsSanta Clara, CA On the heels of its massive sleep apnea machine recall, Philips announced yet another recall but this time it involves a plastic component that can release cancer-causing chemicals into the user’s airway. Incredibly, a third and separate recall was announced on September 6, involving masks worn with the sleep machines.
#9 Long Beach City College Allegedly Violated Minimum Wage LawsLong Beach, CA A proposed California labor class action lawsuit filed by part-time instructors at Long Beach City College claims the district violated minimum wage laws by not paying them all hours worked. Part-time instructors are often paid for the hours they spend in front of students and are not compensated for out-of-classroom work such as preparing lectures, grading and communicating with students, unlike their full-time counterparts.
#10 Texas Employment Law: Don't Wait to Take Your PTOHouston, TX Pete did his company a service by not taking Paid Time Off (PTO) in over four years of employment. Yesterday was his last day of work. He has accrued 150 hours of PTO, but Texas Employment law does not require that employers pay workers for earned but unused vacation upon termination, unless the employer has a written policy or past practice of doing so.
