#1 ABM Industries to Settle Janitors’ Wage Lawsuits for $140 MillionSan Francisco, CA On July 8, ABM Industries entered into a written agreement to settle the consolidated lawsuits, ABM Industries Overtime Cases (also known as the “Bucio case”), pending in the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco. Filed in 2006, the lawsuits allege that ABM’s prior timekeeping and payment practices shortchanged as many as 50,000 janitorial employees in violation of the California Labor Code. Under the terms of the proposed settlement, ABM will pay a total sum of $140 million to resolve all claims. The settlement remains subject to court approval.
#2 Mother Files Lawsuit Claiming Similac Infant Formula Caused Baby’s DeathChicago, IL A mother has filed a lawsuit against Abbot Laboratories, the manufacturer of Similac Special Care, claiming the infant formula caused the death of her premature baby after he developed necrotizing enterololitis (NEC). Baby Eli never left the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.
#3 Covidien Parietex Lawsuit Claims Hernia Mesh Defective and DangerousSanta Clara, CA Covidien and its parent company, Medtronic, was hit with another complaint last month. It joins 12 lawsuits pending in federal court and more than 140 state court cases all alleging Parietex Composite hernia mesh is defective and prone to failure. It results in patients needing revision surgery after suffering painful hernia complications, including severe adhesions, organ perforation, bowel obstructions, and infections.
#4 Lisinopril Associated with Many Serious Side Effects, Including Angioedema and Liver DamageHouston, TXLisinopril, used to treat hypertension, congestive heart failure and heart attack, is associated with many side effects including liver damage. Beverly was diagnosed with angioedema (which can be life-threatening) as a direct result of Lisinopril, according to her hospital doctors.

It’s hard to imagine working six years for an employer that doesn’t trust its employees. According to the California wage and hour lawsuit, Apple said bag checks were necessary to ensure workers weren't leaving with stolen electronic devices or trade secrets and if you didn’t like it, don’t bring bags or iPhones (!) to work. Employees said the mandatory bag checks were embarrassing and demeaning.
