Mental Health Issues in the Legal Industry |
Mental health, substance use and well-being in the legal profession were again brought to the fore with the tragic news of the circumstances surrounding former Pinsent Masons partner Vanessa Ford’s death. Discussions were raised around exceedingly long work hours, alcohol use, guilt, stress, and the legal industry’s role in mental health struggles of its members. Since 2018, Law.com has focused intently on covering mental health issues in the industry, first through its Minds Over Matters yearlong investigation, and continuing through its annual survey of law firms and now in-house counsel, and its regular coverage and community discussions on the topic. We view it as our responsibility to use our platform to continue to break down any stigma around discussing and caring for one’s mental health. In the wake of the news on Vanessa Ford, our latest Law.com Pro webinar brought together experts in the industry for an engaging, informative discussion on how law firms and individuals can do their parts to improve the situation. The recording can be found here. We would like to ask anyone working in a law firm or law department of any size, anywhere around the world, in any capacity, to please take our annual Mental Health Survey. The survey will be open through the first week of April and the tremendous response we get helps us further shine light on the mental health issues and needs of the legal industry. |
