SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY Doctrine & Covenants 68:29 "And the inhabitants of Zion shall also observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy." |
QUOTE OF THE DAY David O. McKay "Let us not make Sunday a holiday. It is a holy day, and on that day we should go to the house of worship and seek our God. If we seek him on the Sabbath day, get into his presence on that day, we shall find it less difficult to be in his presence the following days of the week" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: David O. McKay, p. 34). |

TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY September 3 1837 - At a conference of the Church in Kirtland, Ohio, Oliver Cowdery, Joseph Smith, Sr., Hyrum Smith, and John Smith are appointed Assistant Counselors to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Other leaders of the Church are sustained, while many are not due to the feeling of apostasy in Kirtland at this time. Due to the failure of the Kirtland bank, some had declared Joseph a fallen prophet and tried to take control of the Church. At this conference, the Prophet Joseph is unanimously sustained as President by those who attended the conference--those who had remained faithful. (History of the Church, 2:509-510) 1838 - The Kirtland Camp arrived and camped about six miles outside of Indianapolis, Indiana, having traveled 373 miles from Kirtland on their journey to Missouri. Lucius Scovil's wagon was hit by a "drunken" stage coach driver who drove off "exulting in his mischief" which required repairs before his family could continue on the journey. Also, General Atchison arrived in the evening at Far West, Missouri, after receiving the Prophet Joseph's call for help. The mobs continue to gather in Daviess County. 1842 - A group of sheriffs from Missouri arrived undetected at the home of the Prophet Joseph Smith. As they entered the house, the Prophet slipped out the back door and fled for safety to the home of Newel K. Whitney. Emma asked if they had a warrant authorizing them to search the house. They said no but insisted on the illegal search of the house anyway. That evening the Prophet went to the home of Edward Hunter where he stayed in safety for a time. (History of the Church, 5:145) 1844 - In a meeting with the Twelve Apostles, Sidney Rigdon refused to give up his license to preach. He said the Church had not been led by the Lord for a long time and that he was going to expose the secrets of the Church. He refused to be led by the Quorum of Twelve Apostles and again declared he had power and authority above the Twelve. 1985 - The first branch of the Church is organized on the Caribbean island of Grenada. 2000 - The Birmingham Alabama Temple was dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley. 2006 - The Sacramento California Temple was dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley. |
