TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY May 28 1829 - About this time, Hyrum Smith visited his brother Joseph and Oliver Cowdery at Harmony, Pennsylvania, to inquire concerning the work they were doing. He asked Joseph to inquire of the Lord on what he should do. Joseph received from the Lord through the Urim and Thummim a revelation known as Doctrine and Covenants 11 encouraging him to be patient and prepare to assist in the work of the Lord. 1834 - Zion's Camp arrived in Decatur Township, Illinois. Joseph Smith records that the camp was suffering "from want of water and provisions" (History of the Church, 2:74). 1843 - The Prophet Joseph met in counsel with Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Willard Richards, Newel K. Whitney, and James Adams, in the upper room of his store "to attend to ordinances and counseling." He records, "Of the Twelve Apostles chosen in Kirtland, and ordained under the hands of Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer and myself, there have been but two but what have lifted their heel against me-namely Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball" (History of the Church, 5:412). It is recorded that on this date, the Prophet Joseph and his wife Emma were sealed as husband and wife for time and eternity. 1845 - The workmen on the Nauvoo Temple began construction of the attic floor. 1857 - United States President James Buchanan instructs the War Department to issue orders for an army to assemble at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and march to Utah to put down the so-called "rebellion" of the Mormons. This was the beginning of the "Utah War" which later became known as "Buchanan's Blunder." |
